The Story...
The search for others who shared similar experiences, language and culture was the motivation of Patricia Koine to start GLAD - Gays Lesbians of African Descent. At first, they mainly organized around Queer spaces and Toronto Pride, but began to realise that they weren’t sure they were actually reaching those they needed to. In response to this, They believed that the conversation that needed to happen was for them to be present in the African community, such as at events like Afrofest, the largest festival of its kind in North America. GLAD created the queer spot at Afrofest and their tent became a well-known and trusted space for Black Queers to meet.
GLAD gave me an opportunity to feel like I had a home in my African community that I can be out and supported and encouraged and loved.
