Tips for Common Virtual Platforms
-
Netflix Party Events
What is a Netflix Party?
Netflix Party, now called TeleParty is a google chrome extension which allows people to remotely watch platforms like Netflix together. Teleparty adds a group chat option and synchronizes playback of the episode, it's simple and fun!
Fun Fact: Once the link to join the viewing party is open in google chrome, be sure to click on the 'TP' icon, that's how the magic sync happens.
What's Needed to Join?
- Can only be used with Google Chrome
- Install the Netflix Party Extension - here's a link
- You'll need access to a Netflix account
-
Zoom Platform
What is Zoom?
Zoom is a platform that allows people from anywhere join a 'virtual meeting', this is basically a large hangout space where we can chat and see each other. The Zoom platform is being utilized by many different organizations to hold workplace meetings, social events and much more.
What's Needed to Join?
- Zoom can be used form their App or from your preferred internet browser
- A Zoom link or meeting ID will provide access to the 'meeting room'
- Zoom does not require you to have an account, but it can be a good idea, in fact sometimes organizer will add this as a requirement as a way to enhance the security of the space.
-
Facebook & Instagram Live
Using social media platforms many artists, performers and community members are sharing videos and holding live events. Literally you can catch a live performance, join a virtual workout session or a cooking class and so much more.
What's Needed to Join?
- Both platforms require an account.
- For Instagram, most features work best using the app.
- Look up @Queerevents to follow us and stay connected with the Queer Community.
Internet Safety Reminders
Internet safety has always been important but for the foreseeable future we're all going to be spending more time online and connecting in new ways which means there will also be more platforms and apps emerging.
So although nothing below will be all that new, here are few things to keep in mind when while finding new ways to connect online, especially when using platforms that are new or unfamiliar.
- Do the updates!! One of the most important steps we can take is to complete those platform updates that so many of us avoid. Take a minute to check for new updates for your computer, devices and don't forget about those app updates.
- After a virtual event using a platform such as Zoom, Discord, Google Hangouts etc. etc. take a moment to make sure you've successfully logged out of the platform and closed any connections. When using a computer, it's also a good idea to double check your web cam and mic have been turned off.
- Be smart about what you do online while connected to virtual events...may not be the best time to access personal information, you don't want to accidentally share your screen with the whole group while doing personal banking or work emails ;)
