Add to Calendar 2019-02-28 18:30:00 2019-02-28 20:30:00 An Evening of QIPOC films House of Anansi & Queer Events presents An Evening of films: Celebrating the QIPOC communities Join us for an evening at B13 as we gather to watch films that represent our diverse queer community, specifically Queer Indigenous and Queer Black Lives. To kick off the evening we will be watching selected short films that focus on the Queer Indigenous community and experiences. Followed by our main feature - KIKI (2016).   Film Details This film tells the story of the of Kiki, a subculture of the ballroom scene, Kiki - Part activist movement, part artistic milieu, the Kiki community is a site of radical self-expression for young queer people of colour in New York City, whose ballroom competitions and surrogate queer families provide both creative platforms and a source of succour for individuals facing multiple forms of marginalisation. Shot over four years, the film follows seven members of the community through the difficulties of illness, homelessness and everyday discrimination, as well as the joys of spectacle, camaraderie and personal affirmation. Admission is $10 or PWYC Proceeds from this event will go towards funding for QIPOC initiatives and we will be collecting donations for the Wet'suwet'en fund. Find out more about the current situation which escalated on Jan 7th RCMP and military forcefully breached a peaceful checkpoint on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. Please note that House of Anansi is committed to providing safe spaces for the QIPOC community. We reserve the right to ask folks to leave who interrupt this safe space.
